The Curious Palate

On one of my many drives down Venice Blvd, this awesome little joint caught my eye and one Sunday morning, I finally made my way in. The Curious Palate - how much cuter could that name be? - is a farm-to-table establishment of the most creative dishes you can imagine!

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (but only till 8pm) some menu items include the following:

Pulled Pork: Niman Ranch pork w/onion confit, deglazed in a strawberry gastrique, served on a brioche bun w/bed of lettuce;
The Florentine:
Goat cheese, marinated baby artichokes, roasted tomatoes, spinach, avocado, Moroccan olives on 5-grain with balasamic
Wasabi Shrimp: wild white shrimp, baby greens, grated daikon, scallions&Japanese pickles, w/a white miso dressing

The Royale Breakfast Omlette: w/Surchoix Gruyère cheese, Québec 4-year vintage cheddar&fresh mozzarella

Right next to the Mar Vista farmer's market, this restaurant and specialty foods store will heighten your curiosity with any of their delectable meals and artisan chocolates (among homemade jams, ice creams, etc). They'll make any sandwich a salad and vice-versa!

Take your taste buds on a ride!

  • A friendly neighborhood burger joint, Wood Cafe, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. They serve their meals made from farm fresh ingredients from local farmers and pride themselves for using natural meats too. Casual and dog friendly with the cute outdoor patio, enjoy a weekend brunch or a casual meal mid-week.

I ordered the brown rice burger without the bun, on a bed of lettuce. It's soy-free and gluten-free, made entirely of brown rice and veggies. It was flavorful but a tad bit dry which the salad dressing compensated for. The Wild Mushroom Omlete was delicious, not too heavy but filling after a Sunday morning hike.

Inspired by a Spanish tapa, I ventured to use my beloved saffron in something other than paella. The Italian seasoning mix complements the saffron without overpowering it.  I used spinach but feel free to experiment and throw in any other hardy green veggie for color, nutrition and texture! Keep in mind that the Italian Seasoning Mix I use already has garlic in it, so if you want a milder garlic flavor, omit or cut my generous serving of fresh garlic.

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb Wild Jumbo Shrimp (I used TJ's Wild Blue Shrimp)
    • 1/2 package Spicely Organics' Italian Seasoning Mix
    • Pinch high quality Saffron (1 package of Spicely Organic's Saffron)
    • 4 cloves Garlic, grated or pressed or minced
    • 2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    • 5 oz. Baby Spinach
    • Sea Salt or Pink Salt to Taste

  • Dave, a former acupuncturist, created Dave's Gourmet Korean Food - a line of vegetarian, vegan and msg-free line of traditional Korean banchan (side dishes) that are usually eaten as part of every meal with rice and a soup or stew.

He omits the shrimp, oysters, and clams that are used in kim-chi and makes fish-less fish-cake-like 'tempeh' - a fermented bean patty. Among these highlights are raw, fermented, marinated burdock root, lotus root, cucumbers, shitake mushrooms, homemade miso and sugar-free pickled ginger. The raw U-Cha-Greens, fermented in vegetable broth tastes cooked yet fresh and crunchy.

The newest concoctions are oil-less salad dressing made mostly of fruit and apple cider vinegar. Flavors include fuji apple, Asian pear and pineapple.

They have a stand at many of the local farmer's markets including the Manhattan Beach, Mar Vista, Studio City, WeHo, Burbank, Westwood, South Pasadena and Culver City Market.
